One-Size Pocket Diaper Comparison Chart

A one-size (OS) pocket diaper is defined by its adjustable outer shell; the diaper will adjust both in width and rise.  The shell of the diaper is usually two layers: an outer waterproof layer and an inner layer designed to pull moisture away from baby’s skin.  The one-size diaper shell needs an insert to be absorbent.  Many one-size diapers come with their own insert, but be sure to check with each individual diaper brand.  Inserts are often adjustable to fit whatever setting the one-size diapers are being used at.

One-size pocket diapers have benefited the diapering family by offering both convenience and economics.  With most one-size pocket diapers a family can meet all of its cloth diapering needs for under $500.  Although these diapers tend to be a bit bulkier on a newborn baby than the Sized Pocket Diapers (diapers that are designed in Newborn, Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large sizes), average babies do tend to fit into these functionally well at birth and tend fit into them without too much bulkiness fairly rapidly.  Realize that newer one-sized for newborn diapers are rapidly becoming available that would function and fit a brand new baby of low or standard weight well.

In terms of eco-friendliness, the one-size pocket diaper ranks A+.  Sheer manufacturing costs of just 24 diapers vs. nearly 100 sized reusable cloth diapers needed until potty training.  Or better yet compare the manufacture of 24  one-size diapers to the cost to manufacture the 360 throwaway diapers a baby would use in just its first month.  Most pocket diapers also dry quickly whether line dried or dried in the dryer.  Many parents will dry the diaper inserts (approximately 15 minutes for microfiber inserts) and leave the shells to hang dry.

Top reasons people Choose a One-Size Diaper

  1. Two children in diapers at the same time: diapers can be used for either child somewhat regardless of body type.
  2. Older child who may potty train soon: parents get used to cloth diapering and then pass them on to a sibling on the way or soon to be.
  3. Parents don’t want to buy a lot of diapers: The same diapers bought at the beginning are the diapers you have at the end.
  4. Parents want to be economical but need convenience: As easy to use diapering option with long-term savings.
  5. Simple for Daycare/Sitters: You only have to explain this diaper once.  The child uses the same diapers the whole way and you can adjust them along the way without confusing caregivers.
  6. Adopted/Foster baby: Regardless of the size of baby these diapers are bound to fit.

BumGenius One-Size Pocket

$17.95

Includes two inserts: small newborn insert and a one-size insert

Suedecloth

Aplix

7-35 lbs

Advantages

Easy to use and trim. For a one-size this diaper fits the average baby well.  An easy diaper to switch to from disposables. Leak guard at the front for added protection. Comes with a 14-day money back guarantee.

Disadvantages

Diapers may not fit as well on very buddha bellied babies. The small aplix tabs tend to show wear with time although they continue to function well.

Rocky Mountain One-Size Pocket

$17.95

Does not come with inserts.

Colored Suedecloth

Snap

6-35 lbs

Advantages

This diaper fits smaller than most One-Size Diapers.  It doesn't adjust by a front rise snap configuration rather an internal leg adjustment is used.

Disadvantages

The diaper doesn't come with inserts: this is also an advantage since you can then choose your own insert.  On the smallest sizes the leg gathers may be so close that the elastic would need to be unsnapped for thoroughly washing poo out of the diapers.  Of course the fact the diaper can loosen in this way for washing is also an advantage.  This wouldn't be the diaper of choice if you need a diaper for two differently sized babies.

Snap EZ One-Size Pocket

$17.95

Does not come with inserts.

Microfleece

Snap

8-28 lbs

Advantages

This diaper has front waist elastic and will eliminate a gaping diaper in the front.

Disadvantages

This diaper is on order so we haven't received it in person for a full evaluation yet.

Microfleece

Aplix or Snap

The fit of this one-size seems just a tad wider than other brands.  It seems to work best for thick bodied babies.

Disadvantages

This diaper wouldn't fit the smallest of babies well at  birth.

Mommy’s Touch Easy Clean One-Size

$18.95

No Inserts Included: recommend any one-size insert.

Microfleece

Touchtape (hook and loop) or Snap

7-35 lbs

Advantages

This diaper has a pass through pocket so you don’t have to remove inserts before washing.  The hook and loop version can almost fit as small as you need it to.

Disadvantages

This diaper has to be folded down in the front each time to the required height making it less daycare/sitter friendly. The design of the hook and loop closure is easier to open and close for grandparents.
